De pequeño siempre quise aprender otros idiomas. Me fascinaba ver como algunas personas dominaban hasta cinco lenguas con fluidez. Sin embargo, a pesar de tener ganas de aprender, nunca lo tomé en serio y nunca me empeñé realmente en estudiar o practicar otro idioma. Como yo, la mayoría de españoles de mi generación no le dieron prioridad a los idiomas; eran otros tiempos, el mundo estaba tan globalizado y saber otra lengua no era tan importante.

 

Además, no había los medios que existen hoy en día para aprender; no había internet y mucho menos YouTube. Si querías aprender otro idioma tenías que hacerlo comprando cursos carísimos o asistiendo a academias especializada. Añadido a esto, si querías practicar, era todo un reto encontrar a algún extranjero que quisiera practicar contigo; así que la alternativa era pasar largas temporadas en otros países en programas de inmersión que costaban un ojo de la cara.

 

Por tal motivo, la mayoría de las personas tenían una excusa válida para no aprender. Por fortuna, los tiempos han cambiado y hoy existen incontables recursos que te permiten aprender cualquier idioma sin salir de tu casa, y lo mejor es que muchos de ellos no te cuestan ni un céntimo. Por eso, como nunca es tarde para aprender algo nuevo, he decidido empezar a estudiar inglés por mi propia cuenta y desde casa. 

 

Estoy aprendiendo mucho con las lecciones para principiantes que encuentro en YouTube y ya tengo algunos amigos virtuales con los que hago intercambio lingüístico varias veces por semana; con ellos practico hablando y escribiendo. Las conversaciones son muy amenas pues ellos son muy amables y siempre corrigen mis errores; además aprendo un montón sobre su cultura.

 

Actualmente ya puedo entender bastante bien, he mejorado mi comprensión auditiva viendo series en inglés, y aunque me queda aún mucho camino por recorrer, siento que estoy conquistando un sueño que durante mucho tiempo me pareció imposible.

[EN] As a child I always wanted to learn other languages. I was fascinated to see how some people were fluent in up to five languages. However, despite being eager to learn, I never took it seriously and never really set out to study or practice another language. Like me, most Spaniards of my generation did not give priority to languages; those were other times, the world was so globalized and knowing another language was not so important.

tomar en serio: to take seriously, 심각/진지하게 받아들이다.

[EN] Besides, there were not the means that exist today to learn; there was no internet and much less YouTube. If you wanted to learn another language you had to do it by buying expensive courses or attending specialized academies. Added to this, if you wanted to practice, it was a challenge to find a foreigner who wanted to practice with you; so the alternative was to spend long periods of time in other countries in immersion programs that cost an arm and a leg.

hoy en día: nowadays, these days (=en estos días)
Hay un mayor énfasis, hoy en día, en proteger el medio ambiente de lo que antes hubo. (There's a greater emphasis nowadays on protecting the environment than there used to be.)

no ~ y mucho menos: no ~ nor 
이 문장에서는 y mucho menos는 nor의 의미이다.

[ES] Actualmente ya puedo entender bastante bien, he mejorado mi comprensión auditiva viendo series en inglés, y aunque me queda aún mucho camino por recorrer, siento que estoy conquistando un sueño que durante mucho tiempo me pareció imposible.

[EN] Currently I can understand quite well, I have improved my listening comprehension by watching series in English, and although I still have a long way to go, I feel that I am conquering a dream that for a long time seemed impossible.
