¿Alguna vez has sentido envidia de otras personas? Ya sé que uno no debería sentir envidia de los demás, pero seamos honestos, es muy difícil evitarlo cuando conoces a alguien que tiene todo aquello que deseas. La semana pasada mi jefe nos invitó a mis compañeros de oficina y a mí a comer a su casa, pues quería tener un detalle con nosotros.

 

Mi jefe es una persona muy sencilla y discreta, y aunque ya había oído que vivía en el quinto pino, me imaginaba que tenía una casa común y corriente. Sin embargo, ese día me llevé una gran sorpresa. Efectivamente su casa está bastante lejos, a las afueras de la ciudad, rodeada de bosque y con unas vistas preciosas.

 

Al llegar allí te encuentras con una reja enorme que da entrada a su propiedad y lo primero que llama la atención es el tamaño de su casa y el amplio jardín perfectamente podado frente a ella. Mi jefe salió a recibirnos junto a su esposa, una mujer guapísima y algo más joven que él, y luego nos invitó a pasar.

 

Al entrar a su casa me quedé sin palabras, todo allí era de lugo; los muebles, las cortinas, los electrodomésticos, incluso los cuadros; era como estar en un hotel de cinco estrellas. Traté de disimular mi asombro dándoles un cumplido y resaltando el buen gusto que tenían para decorar su casa. Después nos invitó a sentarnos a la mesa para comer.

 

Fue una experiencia increíble, todo en la vida de mi jefe parecía ser perfecto; su vajilla, su comida, su casa, su esposa, su empresa. En aquel momento me preguntaba cómo se sentiría uno al tener todo aquello; y aunque debo admitir que sentí envidia, me consoló saber que si trabajo duro algún día también podré tener todo aquello que deseo, tal y como lo hizo mi jefe.

envidia: nf. envy, jealousy
A pesar de su éxito, nunca he tenido envidia de mi hermano. (Despite his success, I have never felt envy for my brother.)
Me corroe la envidia cada vez que la veo con su novio. (I'm eaten up with jealousy every time I see her with her boyfriend.)

los demás: other people, people in genera, 다른 사람들
No me importa lo que los demás piensen de mí. (I don't care what other people think of me.)

[EN] My boss is a very simple and discreet person, and although I had heard that he lived in the boonies, I imagined he had an ordinary house. However, that day I got a big surprise. Indeed, her house is quite far away, on the outskirts of the city, surrounded by forest and with beautiful views.

discreto: a. discreet, cautious, sober, 신중한

en el quinto pino: in the middle of nowhere, a hundred miles away, remote, far away
Se nos hizo tarde y el el aeropuerto queda en el quinto pino. (We are late and the airport is far away from here.)
No entiendo por qué María decidió comprar una casa en el quinto pino. (I don't understand why Maria decided to buy a house in the middle of nowhere.)

[EN] When you get there you find a huge gate that leads to his property and the first thing that strikes you is the size of his house and the large garden perfectly pruned in front of it. My boss came out to greet us with his wife, a beautiful woman a little younger than him, and then invited us in.

amplio: a. wide, spacious, loose-fitting, comprehensive, broad
Las calles del pueblo no son suficientemente amplias para permitir la doble circulación. (The town's streets are not wide enough to allow two-way traffic.)
El amplio jardín hace que la casa luzca aún más elegante. (The spacious garden makes the house look even more elegant.)
Una chamarra amplia te mantiene más calentito que una apretada. (A loose-fitting jacket keeps you warmer than a tight one.)

[EN] As we entered his house I was speechless, everything there was luxurious; the furniture, the curtains, the appliances, even the paintings; it was like being in a five-star hotel. I tried to hide my astonishment by giving them a compliment and highlighting the good taste they had in decorating their house. Then she invited us to sit at the table to eat.

quedarse sin palabras: To be at a loss for words, to be speechless, 할 말을 잃다, 말이 안 나오다.
Me quedé sin palabras al ver a mi novia con ese vestigo. (I was speechless when I saw my girlfriend in that dress.)
Cuando él me propuso matrimonio me quedé sin palabras. (When he proposed to me I was speechless.)
Ella se quedó sin palabras al ver a su bebé recién nacido. (She was at a loss for words when she saw her newborn baby.)

disimular: v. to hide emotion or thoughts, dissemble, pretend
¿Cómo haces para disimular los nervios al hablar en público? (How do you hide your nerves when speaking in public?)

consolar: v. console, comfort
Mi amiga estaba destrozada por la muerte de su gato, así que traté de consolarla. (My friend was in pieces over the death of her cat, so I tried to console her.)
Cargué al bebé para consolarlo porque no dejaba de llorar. (I picked up the baby to comfort him because he wouldn't stop crying.)
Me consuela saber que no sufrío. (It's some comfort to know that he didn't suffer.)

Tal (y) como... : just like..., just as...
Mi boda fue tal y como la había soñado. (My wedding was just as I had dreamed it.)
Quiero aprender a bailar salsa tal y como tú lo haces. (I want to learn how to dance salsa just like you do it.)
